The SIG Sauer P320 is a popular, modular handgun used by both civilians and law enforcement across the country. Known for its innovation and striker-fired design, the P320 has made a name for itself in the firearms community. However, in recent years, this platform has also been at the center of controversy—specifically regarding reports of unintentional discharges.
At Slim Fit Holsters, we believe in giving our customers the full picture. We are not telling anyone they should stop carrying, buying, or trusting the P320. That decision is entirely personal. Our only goal is to provide transparency about the issues that have come to light, so you can make the most informed decision possible.
What’s Been Happening with the P320?
There have been multiple reports and lawsuits involving the P320 discharging without a trigger pull. These incidents, though not extremely common, have raised serious concerns among some users—especially those in military and law enforcement roles.
Some of the key points behind the concerns include:
- Drop-Fire Issues (Early Models): Early P320s were found to discharge when dropped at certain angles. SIG addressed this with a voluntary upgrade program, which added a new trigger and internal safety enhancements. Most current models include this fix.
- Uncommanded Discharges (Current Models): There have been reports, some with video evidence, of fully upgraded P320s firing while holstered or during standard handling. Multiple lawsuits have been filed by law enforcement officers and civilians, claiming they were shot or injured without ever pulling the trigger.
- Lack of External Safety: The P320’s design does not include a manual external safety (though some versions offer it), which has been cited in some claims as a contributing factor.
Why Are We Talking About This?
As a holster manufacturer, we take safety seriously. While we continue to offer holsters for the P320, we also want to make sure our customers are aware of ongoing issues associated with this platform. It’s about informed responsibility—not fear.
We’re not lawyers, we’re not engineers—we’re shooters and builders. And we want everyone carrying a firearm to do so safely, confidently, and with full awareness of the gear they rely on.
What Should You Do?
If you carry or plan to purchase a P320, here are some steps we recommend:
- Check Your Serial Number – If you have an early P320, see if your model qualifies for SIG’s voluntary upgrade program.
- Train for Safety – Use proper holsters, adhere to safe carry practices, and avoid off-brand modifications.
- Stay Informed – Keep an eye on developments, lawsuits, and any future recalls or safety bulletins from SIG Sauer.
Again, we’re not saying the P320 is unsafe or unreliable for everyone. Many users have had zero issues and continue to carry it confidently. Our goal is simply to bring attention to the facts so you can choose your carry gun with clarity—not confusion.
If you have questions about holsters for your P320 or want help finding a safe and secure option for appendix or OWB carry, feel free to reach out. We’re here to support every part of your concealed carry journey—whatever platform you choose.
